Mr. Chris started playing guitar around the age of 19 and has been playing for 25 years. He is primarily a self-taught player but has had a few influential teachers over the years. His primary focus is on jazz and improvisation but he also enjoys classical and fingerstyle guitar playing. Chris has been teaching guitar lessons for 19 years and in the last 6 years he began to teach beginning piano lessons.
He is a graduate of the Queens University of Charlotte Music Therapy Program and for the past 3 years has been a board certified music therapist (MT-BC) working in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, and working with developmentally disabled adults.
For the last 2 years Chris has been teaching daily group guitar classes at both Charlotte Catholic High School and Christ the King High School, which is in Huntersville. Next year he will also be teaching a History of Rock class at Christ the King.
In his teaching practices Chris covers everything from the basics of music all the way up to more advanced concepts and caters his lessons to each student based around whatever goals he or she may have. He has had numerous experience playing live music as well - everything from solo, duo. trio, quartet jazz gigs to playing in the bands for numerous musicals in the Charlotte and surrounding areas, as well various other cover and original bands.
Chris believes that playing music and specifically playing the guitar is much like anything else that requires a skill to execute it well: it takes motivation, time, patience and above all practice to be successful in the field. It should also be enjoyable for the student and he tries to do that for everyone that he encounters in his teaching practice.
Chris Jones has been a fixture on the Charlotte jazz scene for almost 20 years. Chris’s guitar style blends the classic sound of guitar icons like Wes Montgomery with the adventurous spirit of modern fusion artists like John Scofield and Bill Frisell. His fluid sense of melody and rhythmic nuance have established Chris as one of the most sought after guitarists in the area.
