Mr. Colin Ray

Drum Set, Percussion

Colin began his journey in music about 20 years ago, taking private drum lessons for most of that time, and has now been teaching for over three years. He has studied everything from jazz, marching, and orchestral percussion to rock, funk, Latin, R&B, and other styles/genres. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he studied privately with composer and percussion guru Rick Dior.

As an active performer, Colin is an in demand percussionist in the Charlotte area in a variety of settings, including Broadway musicals (Substitute for First Date touring company at the Booth Playhouse), and Charlotte’s 62nd Annual Singing Christmas Tree (Knight Theater), to other theaters, venues, and churches throughout the region. Colin is currently a member of several local bands and frequently fills in for other bands as well, performing both original material and covers. He is also the assistant director of hand bells at First Presbyterian Church. As a teacher, he is a firm believer in developing hand technique, reading, and exploring multiple genres in an effort to develop well-rounded musicians. Teaching has become a unique and rewarding challenge, as he seeks to create and explore new methods while spreading the joy of music.
